It’s not what you typically think of when you think Glenmorangie, and I think that’s why Signet has such a huge following both within the hardcore Glenmo fans and the larger whisky-loving audience. For Glenmo lovers like myself, the Signet shows us more facets of what can come out of the distillery when the malt and casks are changed up; a drinkable glimpse into an alternate reality. The whisky is crafted using unpeated barley, so its flavour profile does not hold any smokiness. Serving tips What is the best way to drink? Glenmorangie, renowned for its intricate whiskies, attributes its hallmark character to the meticulous use of only the finest oak casks during maturation. These casks are utilized a maximum of twice, ensuring the extraction of optimal flavor and contributing to a well-rounded finish, whereas other distilleries might reuse them up to six times. The Signet was distilled twice through Glenmorangie's copper-pot stills, by a team of 16 distillers known as the 'Sixteen Men of Tain'. It was subsequently matured in bespoke American virgin oak casks before it was bottled at 46%, and received no chill-filtration. A connoisseur will use a special kind of glass for ‘nosing’ a whisky, called a ‘ snifter’. It is a glass with a stem, where the aperture is narrower than the bowl in which the whisky lies. This serves to concentrate the vapour and make the aroma more intense.)

Like almost everything at Glenmo, they start by filling approximately 270 toasted wine barrels with a 10+ years old spirit, but this time it’s not the OG 10, but one containing the chocolate malt. The whisky stays in those toasted barrels for at least 2 years. During this time the angels take their share and it gets down to about 167 full barrels worth of whisky which gets dumped into a blending tank. Glenmorangie whiskies boast a symphony of flavours with a pure and fragrant spirit. They burst wonderfully with robust notes of fresh fruit and flowers. Its character and style are delicate, with hints of tangy orange, malt, sultana, and golden honey. Which is the sweetest Glenmorangie? For those who aren’t Glenmo lovers, this gives folks something other than the usual bright and fruity whisky. It’s something deeper and darker to sink into and that has an appeal to a certain group of drinkers. Though no matter how you feel about Glenmo, and even if you hate this, I think we can all agree on the Glenmorangie Signet being one of the most unique whiskies/profiles in the world of Scotch. Glenmorangie (“valley of tranquillity in Scots Gaelic) is a renowned single malt Scotch whisky brand from the serene highlands of Tarlogie Springs in Ross-shire, Scotland. It was established in 1843 by William Matheson and his wife Anne. The finish was just gorgeous, long, smooth sweet and it didn’t make me want to take another sip, it made me want to enjoy the lingering memories. This brand is celebrated worldwide for its unparalleled silkiness, richness, and beautiful complexity. The distillery crafts about 10 million bottles annually and is known to be one of the best-selling Scottish single malts. Their whiskies are a well-poised blend of fruity and colourful floral notes, making them a favorite among novices and connoisseurs. Glenmorangie Signet is their ultra-premium core release. It uses a high amount of chocolate malt, is only distilled once a year and the cask management to create it is quite involved. The notes I have from a deeply nerdy tasting says it goes something like this.

The Glenmorangie oak casks are sourced from far and wide to provide the best container to distil and age the spirit in — over their lifetime of 100 years or more, oak trees absorb many flavours, and these can bring a real uniqueness to the whisky.
