Years later, a headmistress is found strangled, the first in a spate of gruesome murders which shock the Black Country. I have, in the past, given up on a crime/thriller book half-way in, because I just couldn't get to grips with the terminology and the different aspects being touched upon, but Angela's style, her characters, and the intriguing, winding plot all came together to create a story worthy of keeping you awake until well past midnight and of minutes spent trying, aimlessly, to fit the pieces together. From the first page I feel totally safe that I'll be guided along a tense and intricate path of incredible storytelling, colourful and intriguing characters and an ending that will blow my socks off.

So, I am doubly impressed by how well the plot is crafted, with the well timed pacing, and how the author made this jaded reader gasp out loud on more than one occasion. A haunting prologue sees a group of five amid the bleak and unremitting landscape of the Black Country making a silent pact as a body is buried in 2004. The first victim is found drowned in her own bathtub, the second suffering a far more gruesome fate, one not for the feint-hearted reader.

As Kim racks up complaints and barely appeases her superiors, she never lets her team sacrifice themselves for her, even though everyone of them clearly would without a second of hesitation. It is fast paced and gripping enough to keep you turning page after page, with several clues along the way as to who the murderer may be, enough red herrings to make you keep changing your mind and a twist at the end that you won’t entirely be expecting. The outcome of the crime that had been committed remained ever-present in the back of my mind throughout reading, and so did the niggle to to find out what had truly happened.But as I listened I began to understand her and appreciate that she is a dedicated and passionate police officer.
