Pages • 978-1-56689-416-6 Last Days follows Kline, a man forcibly recruited to solve the murder of the leader of an underground amputation cult. All ends in tears, as Kline oversteps the rope he's been given to hang himself in a nefarious plot to rid the world of a bad “holy” man; the body count mounts; and Kline doesn't escape without losing yet more body parts to the Brotherhood of Mutilation. As Kline descends into a haze of carnage and chaos, you have to wonder that even if he does survive, would he be better off dead? My knowledge in both fields is highly limited, so, although I wouldn't be able to distinguish which, I'll trust my instincts on this one.

This has turned out totally against what I was expecting - a mediocre mystery thriller - and became something different entirely. Character which can be perceived as sympathetic are really monsters, and monsters soon start to be perceived as sympathetic.

One of the factions (where every acolyte is named ‘Paul,’ no exceptions) believes that only one body part should be removed whereas the other one is intent on chopping off as many as possible and making a contest out of it. This is the story: After being kidnapped by a dark sect with a shocking way of showing their closeness to God - the brotherhood of mutilation, ex-detective Kline is tasked with uncovering who murdered their leader.

Evenson takes the essence of this celluloid horror and transforms it into something grittier and more nuanced. I second guessed every turn, every page and whenever I did, I was usually rewarded with another, deeper reading into what presents itself as a simple mystery. And through all of it, Evenson's relentless writing moves through the strange tale at a nice tight clip.Last Days cannot be properly classified to just one genre - it draws from them, mixes them, refuses to melt and then become solid again, escaping categorial impositions. He looked at the first picture for some time before realizing the girl was missing one of her thumbs. We welcome respectful dialogue related to speculative fiction in literature, games, film, and the wider world.
