This is my pick of training plans for elite runners, though any true elite will have their own coach. Some workouts are based on time rather than distance, so the details will vary with both weekly mileage and fitness level. Look at it this way: If you regularly eat and sleep well, one bad meal or poor night’s sleep will not have a negative effect on you. This new means of looking at the training stress of a program is essentially the same as just examining mileage, but is more accurate. The book provides a series of plans for various distances, various abilities and ways of calculating the correct pace for each workout.

The day that one of the third- or fourth-best runners in the pack takes a more evenly paced approach to the race is the day the best runner will be beaten.

The first time I read it, it made sense while I was reading it but there was so much information that once I'd finished, I couldn't remember a lot of what I had read.
