About this deal

FROM THE ARTBOOK BLOG CORY REYNOLDS | DATE 10/11/2018 'Hilma af Klint: Paintings for the Future' opens tomorrow at the Guggenheim! Bashkoff joined the Guggenheim in 1993 and has contributed to over 15 special exhibitions covering a range of 20th-century subjects. Between 1906 and 1915, purportedly guided by a higher power, af Klint created 193 individual works that, in both scale and scope of imagery, are like no other art created at that time. When she died, af Klint left behind more than 26,000 pages of text and 1,300 paintings, a formidable legacy.

Voss’s biography, published in Germany in 2020, and only now translated into English, is the first of its kind.

Her work has also appeared in Artforum , Journal of Surrealism of the Americas, Abraxas: International Journal of Esoteric Studies , and Black Mirror . In 1986, more than forty years after her death, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art organized an exhibition titled The Spiritual in Art: Abstract Painting, 1890–1985, which offered a new perspective on the history of nonrepresentational art. Of crucial importance is the issue of spirituality in af Klint’s painting - how she managed to translate both the material and the immaterial world into a pictorial vision. GUGGENHEIM MUSEUM PUBLICATIONS Hilma af Klint: Paintings for the Future Edited with text by Tracey Bashkoff. She is the author of numerous catalogue essays and her writing has appeared in Artforum, Art Journal, Documents, and October.

Bauduin, Daniel Birnbaum, Briony Fer, Vivien Greene, David Max Horowitz, Andrea Kollnitz, Helen Molesworth, Julia Voss.

She had a penchant for the occult – a “commission” from a spirit at a seance inspired her to create her most striking paintings. Voss’s biography makes af Klint so much more than an artist simply to be inserted into a more gender-inclusive canon of ‘abstract art’.

She completed her graduate studies at Northwestern University where she received a Mellon Fellowship in Art Objects. She explains not just Af Klint’s beliefs, but her relations with the occultist and reformer Rudolf Steiner and her efforts to exhibit some of her work to fellow spiritualists. Laura Stamps is curator of Modern and Contemporary Art at Kunstmuseum Den Haag and has previously worked at KM21 Den Haag. And she surmounts a greater challenge still: making experiences barely contained on canvas legible on the page. The 103 third parties who use cookies on this service do so for their purposes of displaying and measuring personalized ads, generating audience insights, and developing and improving products. Like everything else in her life, the artist’s relationships with women were secretive, intense and suffused with supernatural meaning. Produced with the permission of the Hilma af Klint Foundation and featuring introductions by Daniel Birnbaum and Kurt Almqvist, a separate slip cased edition containing all seven volumes will be available in autumn 2021. Birnbaum has held the position of Rector at the Städelschule Fine Arts Academy at Frankfurt at Maim in Germany and has also actively written for Art Forum.

Following a wildly successful retrospective at the Guggenheim in 2018, Hilma af Klint (1862–1944) has firmly secured her place as a groundbreaking figure in abstract art.The invention of the telegraph and telephone made it possible to communicate over long distances, and spiritualists believed it was possible to speak with the dead. Her books include On Abstract Art (1997), The Infinite Line (2004), Eva Hesse: Studiowork (2009) and Gabriel Orozco: thinking in circles (2013).
