About this deal

I felt it did a very good job of showing how some things such as size discrimination can be so silly. To The Times Literary Supplement on 27 December 1941, 'This most amusing fantasy' won pride of place in a review of many juveniles, but purely as comedy.

It has all the elements of a true childrens classic: humour; surrealism; grand adventures; and just enough of a moral.King Plumpapuff of the Fattypuffs is made constitutional sovereign, while the Thinifer president is made his chancellor. That happens to be one of my favourite sensations - the rush of memories that comes when you pick up a beloved book that you haven't seen since childhood.

If you are a parent/adult fretting about a girl who is only 10 but who reads Cosmo during morning "playtime" and can quote Bridget Jones/Marian Keyes/Sophie Kinsella verbatim and who is already talking about diets and thighmasters at age 7, then I would read this. Perhaps there is a wish fulfilment element here in the final ability of both sides to appreciate what the other has to offer and in the mutual deconstruction of prejudices. Came across this and had that shock of recognition - a childhood read and the illustrations brought everything back. If you are a parent/adult fretting about how to keep up the momentum for a boy who has gone through Harry Potter, Darren Shan, Anthony Horowitz and even the late, excellent children's author Douglas Hill, and who is now drifting ominously back towards the idiot box in the corner or the latest mega-gore-slaughter-death IQ-murdering computer game, then find this, Andre Maurois' finest hour.

The original French version was at my grandmother's, who loved so much the Fattypuffs, their kindness and their "sieste horaire". Fattypuffs and Thinifers do not mix, and their respective countries are on the verge of war when Edmund and Terry make their visit. I suddenly remembered this book today having just celebrated my 85birthday I loved it and remember my edition had a yellow cover seeing the illustrations the years fell away.
