Go up against the fearsome Fratellis as Mikey, Mouth, Chunk, Data or Sloth to discover the legendary riches of One-Eyed Willy – or never again see the light of day. Along the journey they encountered traps, puzzles, and a family of dangerous yet bumbling bank robbers. The GM will set up the first room, and once someone moves into the next room then they will place items, paths, and enemies. There is no reason not to use the first penalty-free hint for any puzzle if you get even a tiny bit stuck. Combined with the fact that The Goonies encourages you to play around and explore and doesn’t punish you for trying to use the various skills in less than logical ways, this makes for rather engaging and somewhat sandbox-style gameplay.
A Goonie can use Item Cards, Treasure Cards, and Special Abilities in the same Turn their Stunned Token was removed as long as they don’t require Actions to use. The Goonies Escape With One-Eyed Willy’s Rich Stuff A Coded Chronicles Game is an escape room in a box style experience that lets you experience the classic 80s movie The Goonies in a totally new way. It’s not a very long rulebook at 16 pages, but make sure to read it cover to cover a couple times if you want to avoid mistakes like mine.
The Goonies: Escape With One-Eyed Willy’s Rich Stuff – A Coded Chronicles Game includes a very short Adventure Guide that you read first that introduces the Coded Chronicles system. The token starts at the edge of the map and advances based on some of the entries in the books as well as moving up if you ever try to look up a four digit code and that entry number isn’t in the book. The adventures book included even comes with blank adventure pages at the end so you can fully edit and plan the custom adventures you come up with. You can play through the entire thing in around 3-5 hours depending on the size of your group and ability to solve the puzzles.
Pit Token:Foes are not impacted by Pits, but Goonies must make a Dexterity Check and get a Success to escape of they become Trapped and lose any remaining Movement left. I can honestly say that the most fun we have had sitting at a table playing games with our kids is while playing that first Coded Chronicles game. I’m a newish GM type myself, and this is the kind of game that feels like GM training wheels: I can start to learn the feel of being a GM and not a player without being crazy overwhelmed.
Altogether, there are nine scenarios provided with the game – three that cover the original story, and 6 that create a sequel story. You are going to have more fun knowing you are on the right track, versus wasting time getting frustrated or thinking about something in completely the wrong way. The movie on my screen was 1985’s The Goonies, one of the many relics from my childhood now being reborn to rake in bundles of nostalgia-fueled cash.
My kids could probably set it up with some experience, but not until they’ve played the game a few more times themselves.
That being said, I freely admit I dropped any real sense of trying to win against my players and just focused on creating a fun adventure for them. I will admit, it is a lot of pieces especially a lot of Tokens that need to be punched out and getting all of those piles of tokens is a little overwhelming at first.
