About this deal

Some scenario cards require players to come up with a solution to a problem using the items in their backpack. Realize that you may end up with an incomplete product and there seems to be zero chance that Hasbro Gaming will do anything to fix that problem. If only there were a gateway game to introduce the main concepts of the game without lots of reading and math. that would also have been fine, but to just send me a copy of a game I have zero interest in and claim that’s my replacement product is just not cool.

It is definitely much easier to learn to play than the full game, with the rules being simple enough that you could probably sit down together and learn to play right out of the box. Join the community and come discuss games like Codenames, Wingspan, Brass, and all your other favorite games! Think choose-your-own-adventure books, but on a board game with actions decided by 20-sided dice and you wouldn’t be far off. If you like to laugh and allow yourself to have fun and get creative, it's a great intro to this kind of role play gaming. Items can only be used once per dungeon board and you can only play one item per attack or when you are attacked.

The DM rolls the black DM die for the monster and tells the player how much damage is inflicted on them. I noticed that with 4 players, the monsters are easier to defeat since characters tend to take more damage in 2- or 3-player games. As a long time fan of roleplaying games who is also a parent, I’ve tried to share my love of RPGs with my kids.

Personality traits at least do give you different special abilities, but again there is some overlap. The best part was watching them pick up the game on a Saturday when they had a friend over and my eldest was excited to be the dungeon master and the three of them played quietly together for about an hour until they slayed the final boss character. Now with Dungeons and Dragons: Adventure Begins there is a way for beginners to get the feel of the game and decide if they want to delve deeper into the dungeon. If your group, or even one of the players in the group, isn’t willing to take part in the storytelling and improv aspects of this game, it’s going to fall flat, very flat.

The Dungeon Master role swaps each turn and exactly what your group encounters is determined by the draw of a card. Younger children will still enjoy the game if they can read the text on their own or an older sibling or adult could help them read the text. The role of Dungeon Master passes from player to player with each turn, so everyone gets to have a go at storytelling. After this fiasco, I went on Board Game Geek only to discover that I’m not the only one who has found production issues with this game. After the Boss is defeated, the player who inflicted the last damage describes how they defeated the Boss and then reads the winning story text on the bottom of the Boss tile. Taking away this difference does not encourage players to make strategic decisions about which actions different characters should perform and, in all likelihood, renders character creation in this game more aesthetic than substantial. Not only did my son and I have so much fun playing this, my wife and even visiting family wanted to play it too. I’m very confused as I haven’t agreed to review this game, and wouldn’t, as I have no interest in Monopoly or Fortnite.
