About this deal

This is the second book in the series; the first and third have been written by Denise Mina and Alan Warner, respectively. Geillis, una joven de 15 años, pasa su última noche en una celda a la espera de que la ahorquen por brujería en la Escocia del rey Jacobo.

This gives the book a contemporary relevance, at one stage of the night Iris relating to Geillis how more than four hundred years later, similar evils were still occurring, alluding to the two Metropolitan police officers who took photographs of two murdered sisters, instead of guarding the murder scene they took photographs of the two ‘dead birds’ and circulated to friends. She goes on to comment: ‘Travelled time all my life’, and then: ‘Five hundred years between us, Geillis Duncan – it’s such a little leap really. To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. As the time approaches dawn, Geillis tells Iris about how she came to be imprisoned, and offers a ‘visceral description of what happens when a society is consumed by fear and superstition. Iris, however, insists that she is marginalised, fat-shamed, worn down by the modern day’s relaxation with rape and so that’s it, she’s off!Along the coast of Fife, in villages like Culross and Pittenweem, history records that some women were executed as witches.

When she is tortured in her own home, before being thrown into her dingy prison cell, Geillis describes the following: ‘They turned me over, Iris… everything inside my body felt like it was burning, like I was on fire, like I was already in hell and they were the demons surrounding me, and it is for their crimes I will die!We might end up concluding that Geillis only hangs because Iris lacks the energy and resourcefulness to organise a rescue for her. Just children, or girls, old or ugly, outcast, poor, strange, odd-voiced, limping or unholy or too tall or too pretty… when will we, not as witches but simply as women, curse our accusers? The Sunlight Pilgrims, her second novel, was shortlisted for the Royal Society of Literature Encore Award and the Saltire Fiction Book of the Year Award, and saw her win Scottish Author of the Year at the Herald Culture Awards. A storm had blown James’ wife to be, Anne of Denmark, off course and the ship was forced on to the Norwegian coast. Joan of Arc simply had to be a witch by being able to win battles against the English and she was burned at the stake.

But Anais can’t remember the events that have led her there, or why she has blood on her school uniform. On this, the last night of her life, in a prison cell several floors below Edinburgh's High Street, convicted witch Geillis Duncan receives a mysterious visitor - Iris, who says she comes from a future where women are still persecuted for who they are and what they believe. The realm of women who once were the midwives, abortionists and herbalists who provided contraception were demonised as witches to ‘ cement patriarchal power. Jenni Fagan’s Hex is the second in Polygon’s series Darkland Tales, after Denise Mina’s Rizzio, and just two books in they have already made their mark as essential reading.

Queda claro cómo fue el ataque que sufrió, el cual es totalmente injustificable, pero se da a entender que fue algo que se gestó con anterioridad a raíz de una serie de sucesos. Fagan views the witch hunt as being purely an expression of male dominance, almost as an essentialist tantrum. Fagan reveals that in the vast swath of time which separates Geillis and Iris, not much has fundamentally changed. This certainly rings true and, of course, we must be on guard against all such ‘thought plagues’ that exist today. And I’ve been to North Berwick multiple times, so reading about her account of the little town made me even more emotional and deeply connected both to her and the place.

Some 21% of Americans also believe – according to a poll conducted in recent years – that witches are still around and brewing up their fiendish brews. Her spell poems are portraits of people, lovers and cities: Paris, New York, Edinburgh, Detroit, LA, and San Francisco. The idea of retrospective exculpation is one which I feel a certain ambivalence towards: if those women, then why not Margaret Maclauchlan and Margaret Wilson, the Wigtown Martyrs, who were killed under law for their beliefs and without any supernatural suppositions? This book demonstrates the scale of the imaginative labour that is required to enter the psychology of a witch panic and to empathise with the witch hunters.
