When she is tortured in her own home, before being thrown into her dingy prison cell, Geillis describes the following: ‘They turned me over, Iris… everything inside my body felt like it was burning, like I was on fire, like I was already in hell and they were the demons surrounding me, and it is for their crimes I will die!We might end up concluding that Geillis only hangs because Iris lacks the energy and resourcefulness to organise a rescue for her. Just children, or girls, old or ugly, outcast, poor, strange, odd-voiced, limping or unholy or too tall or too pretty… when will we, not as witches but simply as women, curse our accusers? The Sunlight Pilgrims, her second novel, was shortlisted for the Royal Society of Literature Encore Award and the Saltire Fiction Book of the Year Award, and saw her win Scottish Author of the Year at the Herald Culture Awards. A storm had blown James’ wife to be, Anne of Denmark, off course and the ship was forced on to the Norwegian coast. Joan of Arc simply had to be a witch by being able to win battles against the English and she was burned at the stake.

Jenni Fagan’s Hex is the second in Polygon’s series Darkland Tales, after Denise Mina’s Rizzio, and just two books in they have already made their mark as essential reading.

This certainly rings true and, of course, we must be on guard against all such ‘thought plagues’ that exist today. And I’ve been to North Berwick multiple times, so reading about her account of the little town made me even more emotional and deeply connected both to her and the place.
