About this deal

Otto Bettmann made a career out of collecting images, he was the curator and the founder of the Bettmann archives (which are now property of Corbis). His skill at finding and choosing images is readily apparent in this book, and I'd recommend this book on the basis of the illustrations and photographs alone. attraction-featured-image' => 'https://www.mountfaberleisure.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/02/img_ecdbe8d2-9a6a-42e6-8001-d1bf28b7d39h.png', I rated this book a four; the text is really a three, but the pictures--which are repreinted from newspapaers and books of that time rate a five by me, so the average is four. Nostalgia being a stubborn human sentiment, it's not surprising that once an era has passed beyond living memory, it acquires a rosy hue. Otto Bettmann's "The Good Old Days - They Were Terrible!" is an illustrated wake-up call for those who assume that domestic bliss, moral perfection, and gilded prosperity characterized the years between the Civil War and the dawn of the twentieth century.

This important work stands out as a easily readable work but requires hard thinking on those men who put to death millions of men, women, and children. There was no consequences of not doing the killings. The editors show that the men faced no retribution for simply saying "No" to be a part of the execution detail of the Einsatzgruppen and police units operating in the rear areas of the conquered territories of the Wehrmacht Army Groups.

Granted, this was a time of great technological advancement. The telephone, motion picture camera, and automobile are but a few of the modern conveniences that made their first appearance. But daily life was hardly the stuff of a Currier & Ives print, and Bettman presses the point with repulsive anecdotes and alarming statistics. post-thumbnail' => 'https://www.mountfaberleisure.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/10/membership-icon-4.png', sustainability-our-award-image' => 'https://www.mountfaberleisure.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/02/img_ecdbe8d2-9a6a-42e6-8001-d1bf28b7d39h.png', large' => 'https://www.mountfaberleisure.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/MicrosoftTeams-image-22.png', ymal-image' => 'https://www.mountfaberleisure.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/MicrosoftTeams-image-22.png',

The Victorian era is often thought of as an age of propriety, inventions and the British stiff upper lip. wedding-event-banner' => 'https://www.mountfaberleisure.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/10/membership-icon-5.png', If you reminisce for the latter part of the 1970s and the early 1980s then you will not want to miss this one. This essay is a collection of interviews, diary entries, private and official letters (to headquarters, offices, superiors, colleagues, wives, lovers), leaflets, logs and photographs. The photos in in particular, you won't find them anywhere else: grainy, horrible, often taken by a hasty or clumsy hand. Such visual and written material provides the reader with plenty of information about those aspects of the genocide of the Jewish populations in Poland, White Russia and the Baltic area that are reluctantly dealt with or utterly ignored, such as the people's zeal in rounding up the Jews and the possibility for the regular troops to either join in the firing squads or be given other assignments (nobody wanted a soldier to have a nervous breakdown and machine-gun the whole company), or the role played by the locals, who were often all too glad to loot the ghettos, houses and corpses left behind by the Germans; not to mention the army's lower ranks, who would later try to blame the massacres on the Einsatzgruppen alone (their task being the destruction of the Jewish minorities in the occupied territories): actually, the Wehrmacht took care of the logistics of most operations and therefore provided the SS with all the required vehicles, weapons, food supply and, if needed, manpower.
