About this deal

Supernature was Goldfrapp’s breakthrough album and defined Alison as a leading exponent of ‘pervtronica’ (especially when dressed as some kind of dominatrix and attempting to have sex with a theremin). The sound of the album was so influential that even pop poppet Rachel Stevens made a Goldfrapp-soundalike single with Some Girls. Hits of the World". Billboard. Vol.120, no.11. 15 March 2008. p.55. Finding the experience fulfilling and inspiring, they carried it into their next studio album, enlisting producer John Congleton, who had worked with St Vincent, Blondie, John Grant and Bobby Krlic of The Haxan Cloak. The carefree Caravan Girl is a euphoric ode to escapism and the noir-ish, dark glamour of A&E is a delight. Standout Cologne Cerrone Houdini channels Air in its layered majesty. Using an acoustic guitar for the first time proved to signal a major change in the material, indicating a more organic feel, structurally and sound-wise. For 2005's well-received Supernature, Goldfrapp injected elements of pop, dance, and disco into their electro-pop/experimental sound, and the results were immediately successful both critically and commercially. The album produced the group's first Top 10 hits in the UK, " Ooh La La" and " Number 1," and peaked at No. 2 in the UK, selling more than 400,000 copies. It also provided the breakthrough for Goldfrapp in the US, where their eye-catching image and stage show has attracted media attention. We recorded an accoustic version of “Fly Me Away” for a radio show. It was a quite incisive experience that felt very satisfying and liberating. We almost started to feel jealous of the simplicity of other bands that only used a few guitars and drums. That kind of inspired us."O'Connell, Sharon (16 August 2003). "Strange Fruit". Time Out. The theme translated into a scintillating live show in which Alison performed wearing a horse’s tail, while dancers in nipple tassels, mirrored animal heads and little else joined her onstage. A radical reinvention of their sound, Seventh Tree – the title of which came from a dream that Alison had – revels in its confessional folktronica, reflecting a different side of the band than heard before.

As well as that, a distillation of their sound had worked its way into the music of everyone from Madonna to Rachel Stevens and Sugababes and wasn’t exclusive to them anymore. The early Goldfrapp days of Felt Mountain are brought to mind on the orchestral flourishes of Cologne Cerrone Houdini, but its previously untrodden areas like the outstanding Little Bird that really impress. On the latter, there are even hints of the Cocteau Twins, particularly with Alison’s somewhat ethereal vocals.
