Headroom: Headroom is the height measured from the top of a tread to the ceiling above it. While building codes for headroom are primarily intended to ensure enough room for people to comfortably use the stairs, the codes typically require far more room than the average height of a person to allow for moving larger objects such as furniture.

When it comes to staircase width, there are no restrictions as such, but standard flights measure 860mm, and for a main staircase it is agreed that a width of between 800mm and 900mm works best.

Blossom immediately gossips about Lola, trying to portray her as evil. Blossom also reveals that her parents recently died in a car crash. Read more Details I was also pleased to see that, despite the fact that 99% of the book takes place in a nightmare world of endless stairs, Sleater sneaks a lot of world building in--we know that the book is set in dystopian future where most of the population live in a giant apartment megacomplexes, and where the planet's evironment has been all but destroyed (people still drive, but must wear gasmasks outside, and real meat is a luxury that only the megawealthy can afford). In its way, it's even more disturbing than Lord of the Flies - at least the kids in that book had been left to their own devices, as terrible as they were. Young adult fiction must be a really tough genre to wrap your head around, for a writer. You have a story that you want to tell, and you have to tell it in such a way that it is simple enough for your target audience to read, yet engaging enough to keep them reading. The themes have to be familiar enough for them to understand and relate to, yet unusual enough to be interesting for them. Go too far in the wrong direction and you have a failure. So how does a YA writer do it, balancing all those issues, while still writing a good book? Staircases serve as the home’s spine.
