CAF social worker. The Foundation engages an on-staff social worker to assist patients and family members develop strategies to help them better cope with issues related to thalassemia. Candice was a remarkable young woman whose courage inspired many people to join the Bone Marrow Register and who wanted to raise awareness about Leukaemia and the need for Bone Marrow Donations. People whose hemoglobin does not produce enough beta protein have beta thalassemia. It is found in people of Mediterranean descent, such as Italians and Greeks, and is also found in the Arabian Peninsula, Iran, Africa, Southeast Asia and southern China. We are a small charity launched in April 2011 in memory of 23 year old Candice Colley who lost her 4 year battle with ALL (Acute Lymphoblastic Leukaemia) in December 2010. Among the many areas in which the Foundation has supported research are the mechanisms of iron regulation, gene editing, and gene therapy as potential curative approaches to thalassemia; vector development; nutritional requirements in thalassemia; strategies for improving adherence to thalassemia treatments; fertility and pregnancy in thalassemia; cardiac issues in thalassemia; pulmonary hypertension; fetal hemoglobin production; and approaches to iron chelation therapy.
Postdoctoral applicants must have adequate preceptorship and guidance by an experienced investigator. The sponsor of a postdoctoral fellow should be an investigator with adequate experience and at an institution with adequate research facilities. The application is expected to be the original work of the candidate but should reflect the close advice of the interested and involved sponsor. Postdoctoral applicants must have an M.D., Ph.D., or equivalent degree, and cannot hold a faculty position. To accomplish this goal, OOCP is pursuing partnerships, sponsorships, fund raisers, donations, grants and other options to acquire the necessary funds to make OOCP a reality. Fellowships are awarded to the medical institutions where the research is to be undertaken; thus, each application must be approved by and administered through the appropriate administrative representative at the institution. Assurance must be given that adequate laboratory facilities exist and are available to conduct the research project and, in case of investigations involving human subjects, that the project has been reviewed and approved by the appropriate committee or governing body on human research. The research may not be conducted at a for-profit laboratory.
Options & Opportunities: the Choice Program’s initial goal is to create a life skill academic pilot program, in partnership with the local high schools in Riverside County. The concept of this program is to provide leadership and life skills curriculum for six consecutive weeks (2 hours sessions) with a variety of learning topics each week. With the assistance of certified professional counselors, this program will provide the right training material and curriculum required to equip these young adults for their futures, as our great nation’s leaders of tomorrow. In addition, OOCP’s primary goal is to provide four separate one-week camp programs that will include a controlled boot camp, life style program that will provide: time management, goal setting, self-esteem and confidence building, guidance, critical thinking, conflict resolution and learning how to ask the right questions as it relates to the needs to achieve in society. Hemoglobin H-Constant Spring. This condition is more severe than hemoglobin H disease. Individuals with this condition tend to have a more severe anemia and suffer more frequently from enlargement of the spleen and viral infections.
