Like LSD, while 2C-B is capable of producing a full range of low and high-level hallucinatory states, they are comparatively rare and inconsistent at higher levels while common at lower levels. PMID 15006903. most tellingly on this front, shulgin does have a big shift in his life where he becomes a kinder person, nicer, more open, less cutting. and which drug does he attribute this to? none. this major shift - the only such shift really described in the book - is completely due to him falling in love! (not with wifey, with her rival, ursula, who clearly has major issues that psychedelics have not ameliorated). It is generally agreed that the so-called "War on Drugs" has not been a success, and a growing minority view decriminalization as a viable alternative. An interesting consequence of such a change, should it occur, would be a revival of research into the uses of consciousness-altering psychedelic drugs such as LSD and MDMA ("ecstasy"), which has languished since the early 1970s. A key figure in this field is Alexander (Sasha) Shulgin, whose life story is an interesting one. After serving in the U.S. Navy during the Second World War, he did a Ph.D. in biochemistry at U.C. Berkeley, and joined the Dow Chemical Company. Around 1960 he took the psychedelic drug mescaline, and became interested in its chemistry, and that of its derivatives. Over the next 30 years he synthesized and characterized hundreds of psychedelic compounds. The subjective effects of each were first tested by Shulgin himself, and then by members of his research group. This consisted of a dozen or so close friends, who would meet on weekends at the Shulgins' home, try out new compounds, and afterwards write descriptions of their experiences. Illicit use of some of these compounds subsequently became widespread, as in MDMA (originally synthesized around 1912), DOM (STP), and 2C-B. Surprisingly, Shulgin for many years also acted as an advisor to the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), analyzing contraband and giving expert testimony in drug trials. In 1973 the DEA awarded him a medal for his "significant personal efforts to help eliminate drug abuse", and he was close friends with a number of top DEA agents. Two DEA agents even got married at his home.

Shulgin's findings were later published in the 1991 book PiHKAL, in which he listed 2C-B among the "magical half-dozen" of psychedelic phenethylamines that he deemed most important. [2] The list consists of mescaline, DOM, 2C-B, 2C-E, 2C-T-2, and 2C-T-7. [7] In interviews, Shulgin repeatedly declared it his favorite psychedelic trip. However, the role of these interactions and how they result in the psychedelic experience continues to remain elusive. B can be tested using the Marquis Reagent (NIK ® test A) and will produce a yellow/green colour. However, extra caution is needed as 2C-I (another 2C drug with different effects) will also give a yellow/green colour using the Marquis Reagent (NIK ® test A). There are other drug testing kits available that can be used for further clarification of substances, but it is important to appreciate the limitations in determining the differences between the 2C series of drugs which includes 2C-B, 2C-D, 2C-E, 2C-I, and 2C-P. If it weren't for these authors I never would have even begun to appreciate organic chemistry. Its nuances, its complexity. The so-called "magical half-dozen" refers to Shulgin's self-rated most important phenethylamine compounds, all of which except mescaline he developed and synthesized himself.
