When Emily found herself stranded in muddy water, she sought Murdoch's assistance. As a peacemaker and problem solver, Murdoch guided Emily to safety by suggesting an alternative route through the valley. His wisdom and caring nature earned him the admiration and respect of the other engines. Braving the Noisy Sheep Murdoch's last appearance until the eleventh series episode, Emily's Rubbish, as well as his only appearance in the eighth series. In The Great Discovery, Molly received news from Bill and Ben that Stanley had found Thomas. Item No. 8" was twenty-four "Wagon loads of flowers" for "Sc No 1". The set is given as "montage", and the "Shoot Date" is given as 15th December 2003. Fergus' theme composed by Robert Hartshorne was later reused in the eleventh series episode, Sir Handel in Charge. According to the talking My First Thomas toy of Neville, his favourite place to visit is the Ffarquhar Quarry.
