When Emily found herself stranded in muddy water, she sought Murdoch's assistance. As a peacemaker and problem solver, Murdoch guided Emily to safety by suggesting an alternative route through the valley. His wisdom and caring nature earned him the admiration and respect of the other engines. Braving the Noisy Sheep Murdoch's last appearance until the eleventh series episode, Emily's Rubbish, as well as his only appearance in the eighth series. In The Great Discovery, Molly received news from Bill and Ben that Stanley had found Thomas. She later attended the Sodor Day celebrations at Great Waterton.The events of this episode were later mentioned by Gordon in the eighteenth series episode, Emily Saves the World. In a SiF interview with Chris Lloyd, it was mentioned that Fergus' model was damaged during the filming of Bill, Ben and Fergus. His model still worked, but the flywheel could not turn anymore. This may explain why he never appeared after the seventh series. The position of the carpet changes when Murdoch passes through Maron and in every shot when it is on Toby. Fergus primarily works at the Sodor Cement Works on the Kirk Ronan Branch Line, and is thus called "the pride of the Cement Works".

Cranky was the first non-Awdry character introduced in the television series who was not Railway Series-related with a freelance basis. Later, Murdoch has a very long train to pull. He looks forward to some peace and quiet, but everywhere he goes is noisy and crowded. Murdoch looks forward to a nice rest at the sheds that night. But as he arrives, Salty and Harvey begin to ask him lots of questions about his past. Murdoch becomes annoyed and tells them both that he wants peace and quiet, and that he does not want to share a shed with chatterboxes. Harvey is upset, believing Murdoch is rude, while Salty tells him that they are only being friendly. According to the Thomas and Friends Writers' Bible, Fergus is suspicious of diesels, whom he considers “new fangled.”Cranky also appeared in the magazine stories, Company for Cranky, Fish and Fog!, Fun With Friends, Sea-Bound Salty and The Camel Train. Item No. 8" was twenty-four "Wagon loads of flowers" for "Sc No 1". The set is given as "montage", and the "Shoot Date" is given as 15th December 2003. Fergus' theme composed by Robert Hartshorne was later reused in the eleventh series episode, Sir Handel in Charge. Throughout his adventures, Murdoch encountered various challenges, from herding noisy sheep on the line to assisting Emily when she became stranded in muddy water. Each experience showcased his reliability and willingness to help others.

According to the talking My First Thomas toy of Neville, his favourite place to visit is the Ffarquhar Quarry.
