Chilton, Martin. "Katie Morag: Charming in print and on TV". The Telegraph . Retrieved 3 January 2014. The book is set on a fictional island called the Isle of Struay so children can actually use their map skills and locate the island on a map. This makes it more real for them to work and develop their learning. The book has a map at the beginning of the book which shows where the different places in the Isle of Struay is. It also uses a lot of illustrations which is really good as children can see and understand all about the island. You might also be interested in our differentiated reading comprehension exercise on the Scottish islands, which comes in an interactive PDF format. Study the map of the Isle of Struay (The Big Katie Morag Storybook) and you will find that the indent of Village Bay is the only geographic similarity to Coll. Scattered about are a few local place names but further study will show that the majority are stolen from neighbouring islands and mainland locations personal to me. There are several references to Powell and Pressburger’s I Know Where I’m Going, filmed on Mull in ’45. The mountain range called the Five Sisters of Struay have their mainland counterpart in Kintail. In fact their illustration is inspired by Rum.Hepburn, Stuart (25 April 2013). "The Search for Katie Morag is Over". The Creative Space . Retrieved 13 July 2014. The series was shot on the Isle of Lewis between May and August 2013 at BBC Alba's studios in Stornoway and on location around the island. It comprised 26x15 minute episodes (6 of which were part of a sub-series called Grannie Island's Ceilidh) and began its run on Cbeebies on 3 November 2013. This book is brilliant to read to children as it contains humour which both adults and children will enjoy(such as Katie and Grandma Island using Grandma Mainland's hair tint and rollers on the sheep!) It also has beautiful large illustrations with a lot going on to discuss. The Isle of Struay is a fictional Scottish island, home to Katie Morag. Here is where she has all of her fun adventures with her little brother and two grannies. Watch the video below to take a tour of this beautiful island with Katie Morag herself! Alongside this Isle of Struay Map, we have a huge range of Katie Morag resources to use with your First Level children. Winners of the first RTS Scotland awards". Royal Television Society. 12 June 2014 . Retrieved 13 July 2014. The land and seascape of Coll are still my resource but I have to stress that additional characters over the years are entirely fictional. I have to live on both islands, after all. Oh! Except one islander but only I know where he is and in which book. But then I have made the whole thing up from beginning to end, haven’t I ….?” I think children easily identify with Katie Morag’s problems, her moods and the family issues. I try to create stories seen through the eyes of Katie Morag. I think children, through Katie Morag, can recognize and explore the familiarity of the problems that she has. If you would like to experience the world in which Katie Morag lives there are many many adventures to be had in any of the Scottish Hebridean Islands,The series was scripted by a team comprising Sergio Casci, Stuart Hepburn, Martin McCardie, Jan Storie, and Louise Wylie. They used the method of Team Writing For TV. This ensures that the concepts of theme, tone and narrative coherence are successfully carried across the large number of episodes of a long running TV Series. Crucially, it requires all writers to be present at all storylining sessions, and for detailed beat outlines to be created by the entire storylining team. [6] Casting [ edit ]

This book is about a little girl called Katie Morag who lives on the Isle of Struay with her mum who’s the postmistress and her dad who owns the general store. This is one of many adventures of Katie Morag’s. This particular story is about Grannie Mainland coming to the island to visit Katie Morag. Grannie Island and Grannie Mainland have a lot of differences and therefore Katie tries to bring them together. Grannie Mainland is from the city and always looks good because she likes to dress up whereas Grannie Island works on the farm and dresses in her overall and wellies. There is an annual Show Day happening on the island and Grannie Island’s sheep Alecina always wins the Best Ewe and Fleece Trophy. When Katie Morag went to Grannie Island’s Alecina was all muddy and dirty. There wasn’t a lot of time before the Show. Katie Morag has an idea, she suggested that they use Grannie Mainland’s beauty aids to clean up Alecina and get her ready for the Show. Alecina won the prize again thanks to Grannie Mainland’s beauty aids. There was a lovely celebration but only Grannie Island and Katie Morag knew the true secret. Grannie Island never was horrible to Grannie Mainland for her fancy ways again. I'm asked quite often which Grannie Katie Morag prefers but she likes them both the same. Katie Morag sees Grannie Island more often because she lives nearer but it is great when Granma Mainland to visit. She usually comes on the ferry. I’ve got a Grannie Island and Granma Mainland in real life too!During the discussions we talked about doing an episode that explored the theme of death, even in a small way. Our series already portrayed all kinds of emotional, sometimes uncomfortable feelings, and we didn’t want to leave out grief. But we couldn’t have one of our human characters die; it would be far too traumatic for our young viewers. We felt we couldn’t even have a beloved animal die for the same reason. But we could perhaps allude to the inevitability of one dying, thereby creating a natural setting for the big questions that might emanate from any child. It’s difficult to find words of comfort - especially for those of us who have no religious faith. But the more we talk about death and dying the more healthily we can expect our children to cope with it when, in due course (but hopefully not for a very long time) they encounter it. Discover Coll and you will find a hint of Struay, the island home of the redoubtable Katie Morag; a house here, a beach there and, most definitely, the row of whitewashed cottages by the old jetty of ferryboat days. Nowadays the word `ferry’ translates into floating cafeteria and car park. Katie Morag and her Grannie Island would find the concept most disturbing. Katie Morag won two British Academy Children's Awards for 2014: Best Drama, and Best Performance, Cherry Campbell (Katie Morag). [18]

For many years there was talk of adapting the tales for television – the character was first optioned by Scots filmmaker Don Coutts in 1997 – and, by 2005, there was the first talk of filming such a series on Lewis. Filming is brilliant! I really like my own bedroom in the studio. It's not real though. I get to run up the stairs and flash my torch to Grannie Island. Her house is a different set in the studio. The series repeated its 2014 success at the British Academy Children's Awards scooping the award for Best Drama once again in 2015. [20] From Oban you can take the ferry to Coll, where the books first began, where you will find beaches and castles, seals and birdlife a-plenty. You will even be able to see the little row of cottages that Mairi used in her first drawings. We had long discussions about how to portray a totally free-range child, who had the run of the island and was often alone, in a way that would not inspire a legion of small viewers to emulate her. In the end I think we found a balance, compromising on some of the freedoms, but guarding others. You can also encourage learners to act out the events of the Katie Morag books using these lovely role-play masks. Perfect for supporting reading comprehension skills in a fun group activity! What is the Isle of Struay? For a way of imagining the dramatic islands through sound, you can pair it with our Mendelssohn's Hebrides Overture Listening Activity. What are the islands of Scotland? A number of books in the series have been translated into Danish, Swedish, Norwegian, Finnish, Japanese, and Scottish Gaelic. [13] Books in the series [ edit ] Before disillusionment sets in, and you decide to take the boat to Mull or Rum instead of Coll, I can assure Katie Morag aficionados that the first clutch of Struay characters in the first books did have Collach forbears, old friends. Granma Mainland, however, is my mother visiting Coll in the ’60s, handbag and all.
