About this deal

I reported being raped to a member of The Provisional IRA and I was subject to a Kangaroo Court that was Chaired by JB O'Hagan, who was Provisional IRA Quarter Master (and other roles) and later a Sinn Fein candidate for the NI Assembly elections in 1983. The conclusion of the Kangaroo Court was that I was to remain silent and Michael Lynagh would be moved to Dublin. The book and it's contents are a very rare mix of honesty, brutality, many forms of abuse, mental health crisis, suicide, addiction but also of insight, hope, positivity and the various stages of recovery. Pat 'The Gub' Arthurs, from Dungannon, had his finger shot off when trying to murder a prison officer AM: I think it all comes down to motive. There is a huge difference between having fun with other consenting adults and putting yourself in a dangerous situation. We need to have more conversations about fetish and sex. Fetish can be massively rewarding between consenting adults. So long as no one is being harmed adults should be allowed to do what they wish with one another. When I am in a healthy place I can better make decisions about how I want to express myself sexually. However, when I was very unwell I found myself seeking out pain and abuse. That is a different world altogether because there are people out there who can exploit that. I woke up the next day feeling peculiar. I found it significantly easier to tell those close to me that I love them. How did this happen to me? To a person rather reserved with their feelings.....

Groomed, abused and plunged into a world of addiction in West

was stood down - disclosed the names of two Female PIRA Volunteers to this Author, who were living in Aughnacloy and who were not known to The RUC, this Author has never disclosed their names to anyone) My book arrived, I began reading. I closed the book when it got late, yet could not sleep without knowing how it ends. I returned to my sitting room and finished the memoir. 4am had passed and I had work early, but I finished it! Aidan Martin delivers a gritty gut-punch memoir about the realities and complexities of addiction. Raw, honest and insightful, Aidan shows the reader how compulsion and addiction are just the tip of a much deeper iceberg that has sunk many a Titanic. And in his story, we see that addiction in the 21st century can have many varieties and flavors to escape the shame, emptiness and suffering that so many are struggling with in the Digital Age." The book covers topics that are not spoken about enough, in a way that highlights that addiction can happen to anyone. Trauma can happen to anyone. Not only that, it’s possible to turn your life around and use your experiences to help others! In some ways, the book brings to mind Matt Haig's Reasons to Stay Alive for me. Just as I'd recommend any mental health professional should read Haig's book, I think anyone (at all) working with people with addictions issues should read Martin's. These stories and experiences are so important for both empathy and recovery, and can aid people's understanding of themselves and each other in a way that statistics alone can never achieve.Aidan Martin from Livingston has struggled with substance abuse since he was just 13 years old and grew up with with 'no big dreams of success'.

I can say now, that my being raped by Michael Lynagh, was known to An Garda Siochana, however, no action could be taken, or I would have been murdered as was fellow school child Columba McVeigh, because that is what JB O'Hagan said would happen if I told anyone about being raped. I’m in the process of launching a charity which will aim to support people suffering poverty, social isolation, and low level mental health. AM: It took about a year of researching and pitching. But I was a completely unknown author. I queried many places but I found my home with Guts and I would put that down to another thing I consider as being ‘meant to be.’ My dreams came true because I kept going (and because my mum believed in me and wouldn’t let me give up). I wanted to strike a balance between celebrating and explaining the recovery path that saved my life without alienating anyone who doesn’t know or who doesn’t follow a similar type of recovery scene. And again, this book is more than just an addiction story so I imagine there will be many people reading for reasons other than addiction.Aidan Martin's Europhic Recall does exactly that. It's a pandora's box of a book, in that it tells a story of addiction, abuse, pain, and cancer, but of hope too. So to answer your question, I think that first and foremost as a writer you need to be honest with yourself before you expect to put your truth out there for others to perceive. AM: Currently I am two years and three months clean. And I don’t mind answering this at all so please don’t worry. AM: The recovery scene isn’t for everyone and I respect that. So, I think I was keeping in mind that a non-addict reading this may have felt that the recovery scene was a bit airy-fairy or like a religion when the reality is nothing of the sort. I am not an airy-fairy kind of guy either.

AM: As an unknown author I always knew it was going to be a massive challenge to get published or to even get noticed! That being said I had complete faith in the book. I wouldn’t compromise on my belief that it had to be the right match. A partnership. As soon as I saw Guts Publishing, I just knew in my gut (excuse the pun) that they were the one for me.

I read this book in 24 hours , i was absolutely gripped from the beginning. The author of this book is extremely talented with the way he describes thoughts and feelings relating to different events in his journey, you feel in that moment with him and expirence all the emotions together it is very easy to imagine, there is a mixture of happiness and sadness and proper out loud laughter! Real raw context within. I really look forward to following this journey! And also already jumping with excitement at the thought of another book! Thank you so much Aiden Martin you should be extremely proud! As a schoolboy he suffered sexual abuse, extreme trauma and addiction before turning his life around and becoming a top selling author. LL: In another section you wrote, “There is nothing wrong with a fun fetish between consenting adults.” One thing I think you do very nicely is to draw a line between healthy sexuality that some people might find atypical, and unhealthy sexuality that causes harm to participants. You also wrote about sex addiction versus degradation addiction, which is a very nuanced and important conversation. Do you have any ideas about educating people about the difference?

There are times when a book just hits a reader in a certain way that makes one speechless. I am in such a situation. I have been staring at this computer screen, rewriting and deleting my first sentence. There have been few occasions when this has happened but in the case of Euphoric Recall, it was strong. Hard hitting memoir. Aiden Martin gives us the realism of poor schooling, abuse, heartbreak, addiction and recovery. Both Aidan and Martin's sets were extremely well received by all who attended, including local residents, organisations and charities and sparked lots of conversations about local communities, people and stories. operated south Armagh, Caoimhghín Ó Caoláin’s brother-in-law, turned Informer when arrested by The RUC, 20 senior south Armagh PIRA members arrested on McGinn's evidence. McGinn was allowed to return to Monaghan and live out the rest of his life, many Informers enjoyed this Amnesty from The PIRA after they had turned informer, if they were connected to the right people. Over fifty local people attended a Bound Together event on 10 March organised by Scottish Families Affected by Alcohol and Drug s at West Lothian College and heard from local author Aidan Martin and his mum.LL: How long have you been clean? And by the way, it’s okay if you don’t want to answer this! I don’t know if it goes against the “one day at a time” mentality, and it might not be something you share publicly. I hurt a lot of people by doing terrible things because of my addiction which I will always regret. Aiden explained: “I thought I was daft with no academic bone in my body, but after volunteering at a shelter I felt the buzz of helping others and knew I wanted to go to college and try. I've read through the book two times in the month I've owned it and only now have I felt able to write my feelings on it, as it has become very close to my heart. I grew up in the same town as the author and as aforementioned it has resonated with me in a way no other book has. Aiden volunteered at a homeless shelter in his early 20’s and he said the buzz of helping others helped him turn things around.
