About this deal

Mental Fitness by Ant Middleton is a book going through various rules to strengthen one's mind and body, based on Middleton's life experiences in the armed forces and beyond. Covering topics such as confidence, failure, lies and emotions as well as individuality, this book allows the reader to see the part that each of these rules has played in Middleton's life and helps the reader to take action to build their own mental fitness. Personal growth is a leitmotif for Middleton. He is single-minded in his desire to better himself, as well as provide the mental tools for others to do the same. It’s a mission that strongly echoes the Men’s Health credo, though his messages are delivered with a percussive force and in rapid fire. In person, the volleys give you the irrepressible feeling that he’s onto something. About everything. People who treat change as a positive force are able to adapt to any situation, because the human mind is incredible” The book also seems to be very repetitive, not helped by the fact that he starts on one subject area and then disappears off on a tangent.

Only one, Conrad Humphreys, had the navigational and sailing experience to complement Middleton’s skills of leadership and survival. It was a test of the captain’s resolve, not to mention the physical reality of 60 days at sea, during which he lost more than 10kg. Middleton describes it as one of the hardest things he’s done. It was a good read with lots of amazing tips. My only issue with it is that it seemed quite disjointed and sometimes a bit random. It didn't have the same consistent flow that the rest of Ant's books seem to have. Rather, it seemed almost like a collection of journal entry style thoughts. As if Ant had bursts of thought or inspiration relating to each chapter and then and there wrote it out and added it, without the smooth transitions he has used in his previous writings. First few chapters are great. He writes in a way I enjoy and resonate with. He definitely wants to motivate, he writes in clear simple terms and he swears quite a lot. But crucially, not too much. You can push yourself through pain if you harness your mind and develop an excitement towards physical discomfort. Middleton recognises that the mind and body are often talked about as separate entities, but it’s only when they work in harmony that a person can reach their full potential. His 15 principles cover all aspects of his life and are his ‘bible’ for how he handles both his work and personal commitments. A lot of the principles equate to the manual of being a ‘good person’ but there are still a significant number of ‘ah ha’ moments and different takes on the subject that you could apply to your own situation.

I’ll then take a deep look into the three kinds of fear: fear of suffering, fear of failure and fear of conflict.” Some interesting stories - clearly he has led a colourful life so enjoyed that autobiographical aspect of the book. However I found that the lessons /tips that flow from those stories are told in a rather disjointed and random way and are sometimes contradictory. I found this frustrating - perhaps greater edit would have helped.

Diaries & Calendars

Middleton lives his truth. He doesn’t shy away from using his own personal history to showcase how he’s developed and successfully implemented his mental fitness rules. His no excuses mantra and his openness to share his own story and struggles makes this a great read. Highly recommended.
