I like the look of aquarium sand and my goldfish like sifting through it, but small particles keep getting into my Aquaclear 110. It rattles and grinds so loud that I can hear it anywhere in the house. My family often has to unplug it to enjoy watching movies (it’s in the same room as the TV). I now run such one filter (the 350) as a secondary filtration on my 55-gallon predatory tank, where I house my smaller Oscars. Very messy fish, if you’re familiar with them. Phosphates may not directly harm the fish, but they do form a breeding ground on which algae blooms. So, an elevated phosphate level can indeed cause problems and deplete the oxygen content of the tank dramatically.
