About this deal

Performance-wise the iSteady X does well; as long as you are slow and smooth, this mobile gimbal will perform well. You need to practice as the stabilisation isn’t as robust as DJI OM4, but then this is a fraction of the price. There is a slight downside to this design, however, which is that the maximum range of motion in the Y-axis is slightly more limited than the old-fashioned gimbal arm design. In 99% of cases, you won’t be nearing those limits, but it’s worth pointing out. Specs and Phone Compatibility Weight Overall the standard stabilisation features worked well, but there was always the feeling that the vertical tilt is limited. However, while the overall motion and smoothness of the footage were good, I noticed that each time I started to move, it took the gimbal a few moments to settle in. Not too much of an issue, but just something to note.

The iSteady X offers a high payload capacity and a design that works with the latest oversize smartphones that have the most powerful cameras. Its offset motor/arm keeps the gimbal out of the way from the ultra-wide-angle lenses found on the latest phones, a design trait it shares with the pricier DJI Osmo Mobile 3 (also a great stabilizer). Holding down the power button turns it on and off. Press it once and it will rotate your phone and put in portrait or landscape mode (depending on the original orientation). Press it twice and it will re-center the gimbal. And speaking of cases, I’m using my phone inside a Ulanzi case which gives me the ability to attach 17mm threaded lenses or step up to 52-mm filters. When using my phone for video, I usually attach a variable ND filter so that I can bring the shutter speed down to something more manageable for shooting outdoors in bright conditions. The Type-C cable is your standard 12″ plastic-coated cable. No fancy silicone coating here, which makes me potentially question its longevity. But you’re only using it for charging then it’s not taking too much stress and replacement Type-C USB cables are very inexpensive now if you do ever need to buy a new one.But with no filter attached, and positioned to where I hope it doesn’t accidentally press the power button and turn my phone off, it mounts, balances, and works quite well.

One inclusion in the box that I do quite like is the wrist strap. It helps to minimise the risk of the gimbal slipping out your hands and crashing onto the floor below (taking your phone with it), and also lets you carry the gimbal while keeping your actual hand free when needed, too. The offset arm design on the iSteady X doesn’t just help it fold up, but ensures that the gimbal pivots don’t end up in the frame. The all-plastic body no doubt helps it shed a few ounces but it doesn’t put its build quality in the same league as some of the more expensive stabilizers. Those often feature rubberized grips or aluminum alloy bodies, but no such luxury is present on the iSteady X. High Payload & Compatibility】With the payload up to 280g (0.61 lbs), iSteady X gimbal stabilizer is compatible with smartphone within the width of 58mm-90mm (2.2 inches -3.5 inches). Most popular smartphoen in the market such as iPhone 14 pro/pro max/13 pro/pro max/12 pro max/12 pro/12mini/SE2/11 pro max/X/XS/XS MAX, Samsung S22/S10/Galaxy S22+/Note20/Note20+/Note10+,Huawei P40Pro/P40/P30Pro/P30/Mate40Pro+/Mate 40/Mate30, Oneplus 7/8/8 Pro/8t, Google Pixel 5/Pixel 5 XL/Pixel 4 be supported. This isn’t just a second-generation product, but one in which Hohem have taken the opportunity to add the features many creators need without assaulting their budgets. The job of any mobile gimbal stabiliser is to smooth your handheld footage, effectively removing camera shake. The gimbal motors are also dead silent, so you don’t have to worry about unwanted mechanical noises making it into the video (a common issue among early generation gimbals). Usability: the product is easy to use once I figured it out. I have some complications reaching the buttons without adjusting my hands. This could cause a problem, but the stabilization helps a lot. I learned how to use with both hands for fluid footage. The app makes this thing super accessible to everyone. It makes the usability much higher in my opinion. I’ve not tried anything else, so this is my only frame of reference. Fast forward to the last couple of gimbal generations and I’ve stopped doing in-depth comparisons as the differences have become so minuscule. That added extra is the unique gimbal design that enables ultra-wide mobile lenses to be used alongside standard ones. This negates a common problem with gimbal arms often appearing on the edge of wide-angled footage.

These template modes rotate and spin the phone through different clips and are effective for creating fast content, and they’re also, surprisingly, a lot of fun. There are two different timelapse modes. One is just the straight regular “Timelapse” which shoots an image at whatever interval, and the other is the Smart Motion Timelapse, which allows you to combine this interval with a gimbal movement using a set of various options. Both of these modes just spit out a video file, not a series of individual stills. After activation, the gimbal springs into life and works as expected and the motors feel very smooth, stable and move confidently. Using the Hohem iSteady X The “Fantastic Rotation” mode works a little like Inception mode, except that it randomly rotates the camera in one direction or the other, changing to the beat of some music. At least, that’s what it says. Personally, I haven’t really found it to have any correlation with any music that might be playing at all. As I said, this isn’t an uncommon issue and I faced the same issue with my ASUS ZenFone 5 and ASUS ZenFone 4. And this problem occurred whether or not my phone was in a case – although they’re usually in a case. This is a common issue on some phone and gimbal combinations, so it’s nice that I didn’t encounter anything getting in the way of the shot across the three phones I tested the gimbal with. Moment Mode: Tons of one-tap shooting templates available such as Inception, Dolly Zoom, Motion Timelapse, and panoramic video. It can be rotated to 270°/180° automatically just with one tap. Compatible with phones running iOS 10.0 and Android 6.0 or later. With the iSteady X, I can shoot using any aspect ratio, resolution and frame rate supported by the camera and get buttery stabilization. This comes in very handy when shooting with the ultra-wide lens, on either phone, since that one does not have any built-in optical stabilization. The improvement in video quality provided by the gimbal is very obvious, even in static handheld shots. The iSteady X (below) is much more compact than an average-sized smartphone gimbal (above) Stabilization Performance In the hands, the iSteady X is definitely lightweight and it’s easy to believe its claim as the ‘world’s lightest gimbal’.

Object recognition: essentially useless. If the object wasn’t moving or stopped, the camera stopped following and did not recognize upon moving again. I used this function the least because it was not working well. If, on the other hand, you’re more of a vlogger and you’re using the selfie camera a lot, or you’re more of a serious “smartphone filmmaker” who wants to be able to use 3rd party lenses with your phone, then there may be better options out there. It was a little tilted right out of the box after activating and powering it up, but tapping the power button five times sends it into auto-calibration mode. This takes around 40 seconds to complete, and you’ll see your phone bounce around a little, and switch between horizontal and vertical a couple of times, but when it was completed, everything was perfectly level. However, most of the oddities can be worked around, and real showstopper is the app that enables full integration between the camera phone and gimbal.
