It can happen from any stage (with the exception of the baby stage on most releases) either through neglect or old age. When a Tamagotchi dies, the user will not be able to select any of the icons. However, they may see some of the Tamagotchi's final statistics (such as age and generation), and then begin a new egg. Death is inevitable on releases from the vintage era, while devices that allow for generations of marriage can avoid death for as long as the user cares for their Tamagotchi Evatchi: Released in Japan and South Korea in June 2020 and in the USA in April 2021, this model is based on the anime franchise Neon Genesis Evangelion. The user is tasked with raising an Angel to maturity. For a My Tama, this stage will look identical to a standard teen stage character of the Tamagotchi being run, but with a different body color, one of the headgear genetics, and one of the accessory genetics. Spy x Family Tamagotchi: Released in Japan in December 2022 and in the USA in March 2023, this model is based on the anime and manga series Spy x Family.

A dizzy spiral signifies an empty Hungry meter, while a screw icon signifies an empty Happy meter. If both the Hungry and Happy meters are not empty, but the Happy meter is not full, the dinosaur will perform a happy animation. If the Happy meter is full and the Hungry meter is not empty, the dinosaur will perform a Close Up. On the Mothra and Game de Hakken!! Tamagotchi 2, the player cannot interact with the character at all while it is in the cocoon - on the former this stage lasts for one hour, while on the latter it lasts for several in-game hours. By the time it has entered the cocoon, the adult it will evolve to has already been determined.

As a general rule, the baby stage will last approximately one hour, and then evolve into the child stage. However, on certain vintage releases such as the Mori de Hakken!! Tamagotch, the Tamagotchi will remain in this stage for 24 hours if the white egg is chosen. On the Tamagotchi Osutchi and Mesutchi, babies will stay for 24 hours before evolving, sleep from 8pm to 9am and make discipline calls. The only exception is a Kuritchi that hatched from an egg which will evolve after an hour and act like a standard baby stage character. On the Tamagotchi Mini and most Tamagotchi Nano releases, the baby stage will last 24 hours, and then evolve into an adult, skipping the child and teen stages.A second version, the Driving School version, was released in Japan in February 2023, based on the show's second season. Catch/Dodge: The user controls a platform at the bottom of the screen, moving it left with the A button or right with the B button. Depending on the game, the user must catch a falling object, avoid an incoming object, or both.
