I would describe the magic system as a mix of elements from Sanderson’s Mistborn and Stormlight Archive series. I’d be hard-pressed to pick a favorite, as they all contributed in a meaningful way towards the bottom-line and I liked them all.

In fact, I found the many moments of levity quite surprising, given how many of the characters came from tragic and/or dark backgrounds. En cuanto a la ambientación, al menos en la parte en la que se centra este primer libro que son dos ciudades (ciudades estado) y las tierras entre ambas, esta cuenta con las habituales reminiscencias propias del género hacia culturas de nuestra historia. His storyline only really became relevant during the last 30%, and its inclusion before that point unnecessarily slowed the primary plot. Political Fantasy (Scheming and underhanded tactics are used by a secret conspiracy to take over the world. Demir examined Capric’s tired, earnest expression for several moments to see the truth of things, then opened the door and vomited out his breakfast on the cobbles. The author does a great job explaining things so that you can mentally draw a great picture of the events that are unfolding, and how this all takes place within the larger world. This book is similar; for the first half of the book it appears like one sort of book (a conspiracy and war) only to have weird monsters occasionally show themselves starting at about the halfway point(Lovecraft).

My Patrons: Alfred, Andrew, Andrew W, Amanda, Annabeth, Ben, Diana, Dylan, Edward, Elias, Ellen, Ellis, Gary, Hamad, Helen, Jimmy Nutts, Joie, Luis, Lufi, Melinda, Meryl, Mike, Miracle, Neeraja, Nicholas, Oliver, Reno, Samuel, Sarah, Sarah, Scott, Shawna, Xero, Wendy, Wick, Zoe. The murder mystery of who killed Demir's mother and the other mystery of the secret society were also lackluster. I have a bit mixed feelings about this book so let's go through what I enjoyed and then what I felt conflicted about. No spoilers, obviously, but he dropped a bomb (figuratively) in the epilogue that had me going… “wth did I just read? McClellan mueve la historia de In the Shadow of Lightning a través de varios personajes principales: Demir, Idrian, Thessa y Kizzie.

From Brian McClellan, author of The Powder Mage trilogy, comes the first novel in the Glass Immortals series, In the Shadow of Lightning, an epic fantasy where magic is a finite resource—and it’s running out.

As mentioned previously, In the Shadow of Lightning is told from four perspectives: Demir, Kezzie, Thessa, and Idrian. The bodyguards shooed them off as Demir and Capric approached, and they were soon inside, where Capric immediately pulled out a bottle of sherry and poured them each a glass on a fold-down side table. By the time Overin fell to the ground beneath Slatina’s cudgel, weakly raising a hand to forfeit before she could administer a final blow, Demir knew that everyone had bought it: neither the judges, the audience, nor the bookies had any idea that the pair were well-paid for the inevitable conclusion. And Demir and his ragtag group of outcasts are the only thing that stands in the way of the end of life as the world knows it.

The only arena in Ereptia sat a few hundred people, and just a third of the seats were full for an afternoon exhibition match. Reformers in Ossa had a long and glorious tradition of dying publicly, killed by their peers for pushing societal reforms too strongly. Special thanks to my Patrons on Patreon for giving me extra support towards my passion for reading and reviewing! The priest could have been introduced earlier in the story to set up the rest of the series and still have served the same outcome. Plus, Brandon Sanderson, Fonda Lee, and James Islington (all three are some of my favorite authors) gave their praises for this book made me even more excited to read this. As an avid fan of Brian McClellan's previous works set in The Powder Mage universe, I was extremely excited to read his new foray into epic fantasy.
